SAN DIEGO, CA - The University of San Diego women's rowing team took-on local competition at the 4th annual Row for the Cure on Mission Bay this past Sunday, an event that helps raise money for breast cancer research. Rowers from UC San Diego, San Deigo State, Chapman College, USC, as well as the ZLAC and San Diego rowing clubs raced the 4200 meter course. For the first time since the regatta began in 2001, USD's varsity and JV squads placed first and second overall out of the 19 Women's Eight's competing.

"This was a great weekend for USD Women's Rowing," commented Head Coach, Joan O'Hara. "USD's Varsity has always won this regatta, but never before have we taken first and second. The top eight from another program has always managed to squeak in there. This year, to see our squad dominate this event really speaks to the depth of the varsity talent. Everyday, these athletes go out there and push each other. Each is trying to be the best she can possibly be, challenging herself and her teammates; and that has really raised the competitive level of the entire team. Racing well is what they do every day. A regatta is no different."

The major competition for both boats was the San Diego Rowing Club's Open Women's Eight, which featured a line-up of young, post-collegiate rowers from Washington, SDSU, Penn, Navy and other top-level programs. "I knew we would have a good race against the SDRC Eight," said O'Hara. "They are all young, well-trained athletes with excellent experience from very strong programs. But our women just went out there and rowed their race. They have the confidence and discipline to work their boat to its maximum, regardless of who their competition is."

This past weekend was also the first race for USD's brand-new Novice squad. "Row for the Cure was a wonderful introduction to rowing competition for the Novices," commented first year Head Novice Coach, Amelia White. "Both Novice boats rowed very solid pieces at lower stroke ratings for their first race. They demonstrated a firm base from which to grow for the rest of the season. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn coupled with their large amount of potential makes this an exceptional Novice group!"
