Nov. 13, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's rowing team raced well this past weekend on Mission Bay, defeating two cross-town rivals.

The Torero women finished first, as first-year coach Kim Cupini led the Varsity eight to a winning time of 14:52, defeating San Diego State University in second with a time of 15:02, and UC San Diego in third.

USD's Second Varsity Eight also placed first among their respective crews with a time of 15:43.

"I am proud with how the team came out and raced this past weekend against our local rivals," said Cupini. "However, it's only the fall and we still have a lot of training to do before the spring."

In the Varsity Fours race, USD had a solid performance placing second with a time of 16:31, third, and fifth.

In the Novice event, unfortunately the Toreros could field only one eight due to the team's NCAA eligibility, but was able to capture a victory over UC San Diego.

"This race was a great starting point and experience for our novice athletes who were cleared to race," commented Andria Shook, Novice Coach. "I am looking forward to the progression and improvements they will make as a team as we close out our fall season."

The Toreros continue their fall season as they prepare for the Long Beach Christmas Regatta, which will be Sunday, December 2, 2007.
