What is Rowing?
Rowing is an amazing sport that can be found worldwide - from the recreational to the Olympic level of competition. Rowing is a total body, intense workout that instills both mental and physical strength and endurance in its participants. Currently, rowing at the high school level is very limited to certain regions of the country, and many excellent rowers do not emerge until they have the opportunity to learn and train in college. Many universities have developed a Novice or "walk-on" team to give those athletes the opportunity to become collegiate studentathletes and great rowers. Following your Novice year, athletes are eligible to compete on the Varsity squad.

Who Can Row?
You can! All women in college are eligible to come out and learn to row. Generally, taller athletes have a physical advantage, but very talented rowers emerge in all shapes and sizes. The commonality they all share is a solid work ethic, a love for competition, and the dedication to excellence. Such characteristics are crucial when competing at the collegiate level.

What's in it for you?
Unlike club sports you will encounter on campus, rowing at USD is an NCAA Division 1 sport. We train on a regular basis to help you be in top physical shape. Just like basketball, volleyball and soccer Women's Rowing is recognized and funded by the university. You will race at regattas across the country without cost to you. You are also given training and race apparel for competition, academic tutoring and support services to maintain your grades and make well-supported academic decisions. Those athletes making a solid contribution to the speed of the Varsity team may also be offered athletic scholarships to compete during their rowing career. Counselors, strength and conditioning coaches and medical trainers are also available to you as a student-athlete to be sure you're able to do your best in the classroom and on the water.

All work and no play?
Rowers have acquired the reputation of being very hard-working individuals. We do work hard, but we also know how to have fun. Your novice year of rowing introduces you to many people who can become your lifelong friends. The team participates in several athletic events on campus and philanthropic events throughout the community.
