FRESHMAN (2011): Played in all 22 matches with 13 starts at forward... helped lead the team to the program's first WCC championship, and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament...scored five goals and added in two assists for 12 points...named to the All-WCC Freshman Team...scored one goal against UC Irvine (11/11/11) and one against UCLA (11/18/11) in the NCAA Tournament...also scored goals against Pacific (9/26/11), Portland (10/14/11) and Santa Clara (11/4/11)...scored the game-winning goal against Santa Clara (11/4/11) to life USD to its first-ever WCC championship...scored the game-winning goal against Portland (10/14/11).
HIGH SCHOOL/CLUB: Earned four varsity letters in soccer while playing at La Costa Canyon High School...as a senior she was named first-team All-Avocado League and named All-CIF County second-team...as a junior, she was named first-team All-CIF, first-team All-Avocado League, second-team All-CIF County and named the MVP of the CIF Semifinals match...as a sophomore, she was named first-team All-CIF, first-team All-Avocado League, and was an All-San Diego County honorable mention...she was a three-time San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic team honoree...also lettered in softball...played club soccer for the San Diego Surf...helped her club team reach the US Club nationals in 2011.
PERSONAL: Mariah Nicole Butera was born on September 18, 1992 in Los Angeles, Calif....she is the daughter of Donald and Cheryl Butera...was heavily recruited by Pepperdine, Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, UNLV and UC Davis...chose to attend USD because of the outstanding women's soccer program, the coaching staff, strong academic reputation and the beautiful campus...her brother Jeff, played baseball at Haverford College...notes she is a certified scuba diver.
