SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team alumnus, Leigh Ann Robinson, Stephanie Ochs and Brittany Cameron, all had successful debuts in the National Women's Soccer League opening weekend.
Leigh Ann Robinson, 2008 graduate, assisted on FC Kansas City's lone goal in the first 3 minutes of action. This marked the first goal in league history in front of a sold out crowd of 6,784 fans. Serving a tough ball into the box around the halfway line, Robinson connected with her teammate, Renae Cuellar, to beat the Portland Thorns goalkeeper. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. FC Kansas City will face Boston Breakers (April 20) and Seattle Reign FC (April 26) for the next two home games.
Stephanie Ochs, 2012 alum, also assisted in her opening game with the Washington Spirit. The Spirit drew a tie 1-1 against crosstown rivals Boston Breakers. Ochs crossed the ball in and found the head of Tiffany McCarty in the 16th minute of action in front of an away crowd of 2,634 fans. Ochs also had one of the best chances of the game in the second half in her debut as a professional. Spirit will host Western NY Flash (April 20) and Sky Blue FC (April 27) in the next couple weeks.
Brittany Cameron, 2009 graduate, lead her team, Sky Blue FC, to a 1-0 victory over Western NY Flash. Her performance records the first shutout in NWSL history and she was voted Player of the Week by the media for week one of the 2013 season. Cameron was tested early, having to step-up and save a penalty kick in the 16th minute of action against Flash forward Adriana, diving to the left side of the goal to preserve the shutout. She was then tested against Abby Wambach in the final minutes of play, and yet again came out successful. Sky Blue FC's schedule takes them to Washington Spirit (April 27) and to Western NY (May 1) in the next couple weeks.
