IN A NUTSHELL: The University of San Diego women's soccer team (10-5-2, 4-1-0 WCC) will close out its home schedule this week with a Friday WCC match against Gonzaga at 7 p.m., then on Sunday Seattle University comes to Torero Stadium for a 1 p.m. match.
LAST TIME OUT: San Diego posted a 2-0-0 record this past week, picking yo a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount and a 2- win over Pepperdine. In Friday's win, Stephanie Ochs sent a diagonal cross into the far side of the goal box, where Elissa Magracia sprinted to the ball and went right past the `keeper to launch the ball into the back of the net to give USD the only goal they would need in the ninth minute. Ochs then tallied her first goal of the match in the 25th minute of action, as she dribbled the ball past a pair of defenders and hit a laser strike out of the reach of the LMU `keeper, to give USD a 2-0 lead. Ochs then put the match out of reach in the 54th minute, as she battled for a lose ball near mid field, won the battle, and slipped behind the defenders to have a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she easily got the ball past the `keeper to put the match at its final of 3-0. In Sunday's win, at the 33:14 mark, Ochs had the ball deep in Waves territory, then chipped a pass to Addie Cartan, who in turn then sent a cross to Christine Mock, who scored the goal. Then in the 64th minute of action. A lose ball to the far side of the goal box pulled Pepperdine's keeper out of the goal, where Elissa Magracia was there to take it away from the keeper, then crossed it into the center of the goal box, where Mock faked as though she would take a shot, which froze the Pepperdine defender, and allowed the ball to go to the feet of Mariah Hobbs, who hit a one-timer into the back of the net to put the match at its final of 2-0.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: Gonzaga enters the week with an overall record of 8-9-0 and are 2-3-0 in the WCC after picking up a 3-1 win over San Francisco and a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's this past week. San Diego leads the all-time series at 13-3-0. The Zags' offense is led by a pair of four-goal scorers in sophomore forward Sarah Rhodes and junior forward Jesse Sorenson. The goalkeeping duties have been split between senior Jessie Thalman (731:38) and Amy Danielson (708:22) with Thalman posting a goals-against-average of 1.97 and Danielson has a GAA of 1.21. The Bulldogs are under the direction of first-year head coach Amy Edwards.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Seattle University enters the week with an overall record of 7-9-1 after picking up a 3-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield and defeating UC Santa Barbara 3-2 in double overtime this past week. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in women's soccer. Junior midfielder Kara Kuttler leads the team's offense as she had a team-leading 10 goals and has added in three assists for 23 points. Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Goverde anchors down the defense as she has a goals-against-average of 1.21. The Redhawks are under the direction of 13th-year head coach Julie Woodward.
OCHS EXPLODES OFFENSIVELY: Sophomore forward Stephanie Ochs had a huge week for the Toreros as she had her hand in four of USD's five goals this past week. In Friday's 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount, Ochs had an assist on the game-winner, then poked in a pair of goals herself. In Sunday's 2-0 win over Pepperdine, Ochs had an assist on the game-winning goal, which now moves her season total to a team-best four goals and a team-leading six assists for 14 points.
THERE'S ANOTHER ONE: Freshman forward Mariah Hobbs became the 11th different player to score a goal for the Toreros this season in the win against Pepperdine this past Sunday. This was the first goal of her career..
NO GOAL FOR YOU!: San Diego's sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Parsons tallied a pair of shutouts this past week against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine to run her season total to seven, and she also lowered her goals-against-average to 1.16. Her seven shutouts is tied for second best in the WCC.
TOREROS TABBED SECOND IN WCC PRESEASON POLL: The University of Portland garnered the maximum seven first place votes and was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2009 WCC women's soccer head coaches preseason poll. The Pilots are followed in the poll by 2008 NCAA Tournament participant San Diego, which was picked second, Santa Clara third, and Pepperdine tabbed fourth. Rounding out this year's poll was Loyola Marymount, picked fifth, followed by Gonzaga in sixth, San Francisco in seventh, and Saint Mary's eighth. San Diego returns eight starters including 21 letterwinners overall from last year's squad that posted a 15-5-3 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Toreros, who posted a program-best 6-1 WCC record last season, will be led by 2008 All-WCC first team member Jackie Zinke, who was also named to the preseason all-conference team, and Natalie Garcia, Elissa Magracia, and Stephanie Ochs, all of whom were named to the 2008 All-WCC freshman team..

THE GREENWOOD FILE: Since taking over the San Diego women's soccer program in 2003, Ada Greenwood has upheld the rich soccer tradition that San Diego is known for and continues to build a successful and nationally recognized program. Just the third coach in USD's storied 15 year history, Greenwood has compiled an overall record of 69-44-12 in his five seasons at the helm. As San Diego's top assistant from 1998-2002, Greenwood helped USD to a 66-30-5 record and four NCAA College Cup appearances. In his second year as a head coach in 2004, he guided USD to a 12-8-2 overall record, a 5-1-1 mark in the difficult West Coast Conference, and a second round appearance in the NCAA College Cup, maintaining USD's streak of six consecutive postseason appearances. For his efforts, Greenwood was honored as both the 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year and the 2004 San Diego Union Tribune Coach of the Year.
