SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team posted a shut-out victory over the CSU San Marcos Cougars at home in preparation for the San Diego Classic II which starts Friday, March 15.
San Diego jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning with a single to right field by Jennifer Ellenbeck scoring Carey Casciola from third base and Danielle Duhart from second base. The Toreros picked up their third run in the second inning on a Casciola single to centerfield scoring Nichole Valenzuela.
Later in the bottom of the fourth inning, USD posted another two runs as Valenzuela led off with a single up the middle. Three batters later, Duhart took base on an RBI single to left field scoring Valenzuela. Duhart stole second base and then scored on a Cougar error during Lindsey Fleet's at bat lifting San Diego to a 5-0 lead.
The final run came in the fifth inning when Ellenbeck led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Taryn Keenan. Ellenbeck scored when Valenzuela sent a shot to right field for an RBI double for the 6-0 victory.
Casciola was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Duhart was 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Ellenbeck hit 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored while Nichole Valenzuela hit a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Ellenbeck picks up the win moving to 3-8 overall allowing only one hit and striking out two batters.
San Diego returns to the USD Softball complex for a tournament starting on Friday, March 15 at 4:30 p.m. when they face Utah followed by Texas A&M.
