SANTEE, Calif. - The USD softball team opened up play at the San Diego Classic II with a 6-0 win over Buffalo on Friday afternoon at the Santee Sportsplex. The Toreros (11-12) got timely hitting while also taking advantage of four Buffalo errors to take an early lead and never look back.
Lauren Tomey got the Torero offense started when she ripped a two-run triple off the right field fence in the bottom of the first that was inches from being a home run but gave USD a quick 2-0 advantage.
USD kept the offensive momentum going in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Chloe Kaneko up the middle that scored Tatum Schultz. Morgan Kurtz got caught in between second and third on the play but the Buffalo catcher threw the ball into center field attempting to back-pick Kurtz, which allowed Dana Prelsnik to score from third. During the next at-bat, Morgan Kurtz scored from third on a wild pitch that put the Toreros up 5-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kyle Ordos ripped a line drive that got past a diving Buffalo center fielder, resulting in a triple for Ordos, who actually wound up scoring on the play when the shortstop couldn't handle the relay throw in.
That would be all the scoring the Toreros would need as the USD defense held Buffalo (4-14) in check.
Jenny Lahitte (4-7) turned in another strong outing with 6.0 innings pitched where she didn't allow a run and scattered three hits while striking out five and walking one. Grace Hernandez closed out the game in the seventh with a one-two-three inning.
Tomey was 2-for-3 with two RBI on the day, while Ordos (2-for-3, R) also registered a multi-hit game for the Toreros.
USD returns to action on Saturday morning with a doubleheader scheduled for 9 am versus Marist and 2 pm against Bryant at the Santee Sportsplex.
