(San Diego, CA) - The USD softball team earned a 4-3 victory in 8 innings over the BYU Cougars in the opening game of the San Diego Classic. The Toreros are co-hosting the event with San Diego State this weekend. USD freshman Alicia Massei knocked in the game-winner with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sara Mason from third base. Senior Anna Russell went the distance for the Toreros to improve to 6-2 on the season. She scattered 4 hits and recorded 2 strikeouts in the win.
The Toreros took advantage of 3 BYU errors in the bottom of the third to score 3 runs on just one hit. The Cougars answered with 1 run in the 5th, then tied the score at 3-all in the 6th on a two-out two-run homer to left field by Kate Walker. Neither team scored in the 7th so the international rule of placing a runner on 2nd base to begin the inning in the 8th was used.
In the top of the 8th Russell got the Cougars out with two ground outs and a pop up. In the bottom of the 8th, Sara Mason was placed on 2nd. Jennifer Delpit reached first on an error by pitcher Niki Anderson (5-3) with Mason advancing to third. Kim Delpit walked to load the bases, and Massei followed with her game-winning sac-fly. BYU's Nikki Anderson allowed just two Torero hits and recorded 5 strikeouts.
The Toreros will play Central Connecticut tomorrow at 5 pm. Other games scheduled at the USD Softball Complex include Buffalo-Indiana (9 am), Dartmouth-Buffalo (11 am), Dartmouth-BYU (1 pm), and BYU-Central Connecticut (3 pm).
