USD @ Cal State Bakersfield Box Score - Game 2
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team opened up Pacific Coast Softball Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a pair of road wins over Cal State Bakersfield. USD earned a 6-1 victory in game one behind Jenny Lahitte's two-hit complete game and posted a 2-1 come-from-behind win in game two with the help of Lauren Tomey's third home run of the year and Morgan Kurtz's go-ahead RBI single.
Tomey collected three hits between the two games, while third baseman Chloe Kaneko connected for her first-career home run and tallied a season-high five RBI in game one with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Jessica Tieszen and Kylie Ordos each went 2-for-4 with a run scored in game one as well. Lahitte (7-5) recorded 10 strikeouts in the win for her third double-digit strikeout performance this season.
Kaneko got the USD offense started in game one when she blasted a two-out, three-run shot to left field off Roadrunner starter Marissa Hiller that put the Toreros up 3-0 early.
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Cal State Bakersfield (7-25, 0-2 PCSC) got a solo home run from Amy Ricciardi that cut the USD lead to 3-1.
The Toreros (15-11, 2-0 PCSC) answered in the next half inning when they put up two runs on Kaneko's two-run single to left that plated Kylie Ordos and Kylie McNutt to give USD a 5-1 lead.
USD got one more insurance run in the top of the seventh when Tieszen scored following an error by CSUB first baseman Sara Smith.
Lahitte was in control throughout game one as she allowed only one run on two hits, while Hiller (2-8) took the loss after throwing 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
Game two was much more of a pitcher's dual as Katlin Healy and Sarah Hoag traded zeros until the bottom of the fourth when Bree Sandoval put CSUB on the board with an RBI single.
Cassidy Coleman relieved Healy in the bottom of the sixth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out cleanup hitter Myshayla Fryer.
Despite a total of six errors between the two teams, the score would remain 1-0 in favor of CSUB until the top of the seventh when Tomey led off the inning with a solo shot that tied the game at 1-1. Kurtz then drove in the eventual game-winner with an RBI single that brought home Katie Emerson.
Coleman (6-4) allowed one runner to get to second base in the bottom of the seventh but closed out the game by striking out the side to pick up the win.
Coleman went 2.0 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a run or hit, while striking out four. Hoag (3-14) took the loss for the Roadrunners with her 7.0 innings of work where she allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
USD and CSUB conclude the four-game set on Sunday with another doubleheader slated to start at 12:00 pm.
