SAN DIEGO, Calif. - University of San Diego softball head coach Melissa McElvain announced the signing of four student-athletes to join the Torero program in the fall of 2010. Those student-athletes include Cassidy Coleman (San Diego, CA), Jenny Lahitte (Alpine, CA), Kylie Ordos (San Juan Capistrano, CA), and Dana Prelsnik (Pebble Beach, CA).
"We are very excited about the four young ladies we have signed," said McElvain. "They are outstanding people as well as talented athletes. This recruiting class will be a tremendous addition to our program."
Coleman, a local stand-out pitcher out of Horizon High School, has established herself as one of San Diego's top hurlers. She is a three-time First Team All-League selection, Coastal South League Pitcher of the Year her freshman year, and 2-time Coastal South League Player of the Year. She is as dangerous in the batter's box as she is on the mound. Her junior year she posted a .429 batting average, while shutting down her opponents with a minuscule 0.39 ERA. She is among the leaders of several pitching records for the CIF San Diego Section, including holding the single season record for strikeouts with 516. Coleman plays her travel ball with perennial power The Next Level. "Cassidy has all the tools as a pitcher: speed, command, and movement," McElvain said. "All of her records are impressive, but more importantly, she is a team player and a leader."
Lahitte is another top local pitcher from Granite Hills High School, and also represents the So. Cal Breakers club team. She has built an impressive resume so far in her high school career. She led her team to a Division I CIF San Diego Section Championship her sophomore year. She is a 2-time All East County First Team selection. She has also been recognized by the CIF with a First-Team selection her sophomore year, and a Second Team selection her junior year. Lahitte has proven herself in the classroom as well, being named to the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic First Team with an impressive 4.4 GPA in her junior year. "Jenny is an outstanding pitcher. She has excellent presence in the circle and exceptional command of her pitches," said McElvain. "Jenny can also make an impact offensively."
Ordos preps at Dana Hills High School. As a starter at shortstop for the Dolphins since her freshman year, she has helped her team reach the CIF playoffs in both her freshman and junior year. In both those years, she was voted Second Team All South Coast League, while also being named her team's best defensive player. Ordos has also been a mainstay at shortstop for her club team, the American Athletics, out of Mission Viejo, CA. "Kylie is one of the best middle infielders we've seen in some time," McElvain said. "She has a great glove, good range, and arm strength at a key position."
Prelsnik, a utility player at Stevenson School, is no stranger to success. Her team has been Mission Trail League champions, while also finishing 2nd in the CIF Central Coast Section Finals in each of her first three years with the Pirates. The individual accolades match her team's achievements. Prelsnik is a 3-time All-League selection as well as a 3-time All-County player. In her junior year, she posted a .419 batting average with a .559 slugging percentage. Prelsnik has also been a leader for her travel team, the Salinas Wildcats. "Dana will bring versatility and speed to our team," McElvain said. "She is a solid middle infielder and plays with a lot of heart and determination."
The Toreros are set to begin their 2010 season at home on February 13th against UC Riverside and Boise State.
