SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 42 University of San Diego women's tennis team (3-2) cruised past No. 68 Hawaii 5-1 Tuesday evening at the Hogan Tennis Center to win their second consecutive match over a ranked opponent.
In a match that was postponed due to a wet court surface, the Toreros were able to win five of their six singles matches. Doubles were not played due to an impending rain storm.
Freshman Marta Stojanovic got the Toreros off on the right foot, sweeping her match 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Stojanovic is now 4-1 in singles play in 2013. Senior captains Laura Claus and Cara Brown followed suit, winning their matches 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots respectively.
The Toreros' lone loss came at the No. 1 where senior Stephanie Hoffpauir fell 6-3, 6-1 to Hawaii's Katarina Poljakova. The last two singles matches resulted in Torero victories. Freshman Shani Blecher won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot and Anna Depenau battled back after losing the first set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4.
The Toreros, who dropped two spots to No. 42 in the latest ITA team rankings, will look to extend their winning streak to three matches when they host No. 2 USC March 1 at 1:30 p.m. This will be the fifth consecutive match against a ranked opponent, and third overall against a top-five team.
