SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 64 University of San Diego women's tennis team (3-4) fell to No. 8 Michigan (9-3) Friday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
After the match was delayed over five hours, the weather finally cooperated, allowing for singles action to get underway where Laura Claus defeated No. 33 Ronit Yurovsky 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2, snapping her 15 match win streak.
The Toreros, who were playing their third top ten opponent on the season, dropped four of the six singles matches. Doubles were not played.
Marta Stojanovic earned the other singles victory for the Toreros, knocking off Amy Zhu 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 at the No. 5.
The Wolverines were coming off a huge win over No. 2 Duke and their momentum carried over to the West Coast. No. 41 Emina Bektas defeated Stephanie Hoffpauir 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1, Sarah Lee beat Shani Blecher 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3, and Brooke Boldender knocked off Anna Depenau 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 at the No. 4. Lastly Mimi Nguyen outlasted Cara Brown 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6, ending Brown's four match win streak.
Claus' victory over Yorovsky was her first over a ranked opponent this season and she has now won in three of her last four matches.
The Toreros will host two more ranked opponents next week in No. 23 Texas Tech (Tuesday) and No. 38 Texas (Wednesday). Both matches will be at 10:00 a.m. and at the Hogan Tennis Center.
