SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team knocked off Portland, 7-0, in their West Coast Conference home opener on Friday afternoon from the Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros swept doubles before cruising through singles without dropping a set.
Leading the way for USD (5-7) was the duo of Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica, who improved to 11-0 in dual doubles with their 8-2 win at No. 2. Also tallying doubles victories for the Toreros were Juliette Coupez and Laura Claus, who won 8-4, and Stephanie Hoffpauir and Cara Brown, who improved to 4-1 this spring at No. 3 with an 8-1 victory.
In singles, no Torero dropped more than two games in any match. Sujica pulled off a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5, while Depenau won her eighth dual singles contest in a row with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Brown registered her fifth-consecutive singles win as well, as she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
Coupez improved to a team-best 17-6 overall in singles this year with her win at No. 1 by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile, Hoffpauir tallied her third dual singles win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Rounding out the strong day for USD was Marite Raygada, who won 6-2, 6-2 for her first win at No. 4 this spring.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they welcome Gonzaga to the Hogan Tennis Center for a 10:30 am first serve.
