SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to the 42nd-ranked Saint Mary's Gaels in their regular season finale on Saturday morning at the Hogan Tennis Center. Despite a strong start by the 68th-ranked Toreros in sweeping doubles play, they were unable to keep the momentum going in their favor as they only one two of the six singles contests.
Highlighting the day for USD was their No. 2 doubles tandem of Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau, who improved to 17-0 in dual doubles and 21-4 overall with their 8-3 victory. Sujica and Depenau have already set a new USD record for most dual doubles wins by a pair and are closing in on the single-season record of 24 overall doubles wins by a pair.
Juliette Coupez and Laura Claus won their third-straight doubles contest with a 9-7 victory at No.1, while Stephanie Hoffpauir and Cara Brown improved to 8-3 on the year with an 8-0 shutout at No. 3.
In singles action, Claus posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 along with Sujica, who won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. The Toreros (10-9, 6-2 WCC) battled in their singles losses, losing two of them in tight three-set matches with another narrow defeat at No. 1.
With the regular season in the books, the Toreros are expected to be the No. 3 seed heading into the West Coast Conference Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma, Calif. Apr. 25-28.
