SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s tennis team fell to the No. 1 seed St. Mary’s 4-1 in the semifinals of the WCC Tournament Friday afternoon. The No. 56th ranked Toreros finished the season with a 12-11 record, giving them five consecutive winning seasons.
"They came out really strong in the doubles. We were thinking since they hadn’t played in ten days that we could catch them a little off, but they came out fresh and strong," Head Coach Sherri Stephens said after the match. "I thought it would be an advantage for us having played the last two days, but it ended up being a disadvantage. St. Mary’s played aggressive and strong from the beginning. They played well."
The Toreros found themselves in an early hole after losing the doubles point to the Gaels. The Toreros 68th ranked duo of Laura Claus and Shani Blecher were the first to fall, going down 8-3 to the Gaels’ Jenny Jullien and Danielle Flores at the No. 1. The Gaels clinched the doubles point with another 8-3 at the No. 3 where Jade Frampton and Danielle Flores knocked off Anna Depenau and Nicole Ramser. Cara Brown and Marta Stojanovic held a 7-4 lead at the No. 2 but the match went unfinished.
The Toreros would win the first singles point after Anna Depenau earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5. However, that would be the only point the Toreros would win as the Gaels won go on to win the next three singles matches to secure a 4-1.
Jade Frampton earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over Marta Stojanovic
at the No. 4, which was followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win for No. 23 Jenny Jullien over No. 79 Laura Claus
at the No. 1.
The Gaels clinched the match after Catherine Isip earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stephanie Hoffpauir at the No. 2. The Gaels will face the No. 2 seed Pepperdine in tomorrow’s WCC Championship match. The Waves, who beat No. 3 Santa Clara 4-2, have won 22 of the last 25 WCC titles.
With the Toreros season-ending loss, the careers of their three seniors, Laura Claus, Stephanie Hoffpauir, and Cara Brown come to an end.
"I have three important seniors with all of them playing in the top six. All three of them have had their own individual struggles, but they have all worked through them beautifully," Stephens said. "They are very team-oriented; two of them (Claus & Brown) are captains of the team. They are three great girls."
