Junior Cara Brown put in a strong day herself, coming back from losing the first set to San Diego State's Roxanne Ellison to post a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. She then went on to knock off Megan Lester of UCLA by a decisive score of 6-3, 6-0. Brown's next opponent will be seven-seed Lacey Smyth of Arizona in Friday's round of 32, set to begin at 10:00 am.
Sophomore Idil Haciraifoglu notched another victory for the Toreros as she topped Pepperdine's Megan Moore 7-6(1), 6-2 in first-round action, before eventually losing to Sabrina Santamaria of USC 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
After first-round byes, senior Juliette Coupez and juniors Stephanie Hoffpauir and Laura Claus posted victories in the round of 64. 14th-seeded Coupez cruised past April Scatliffe of UC Santa Barbara 6-1, 6-0. She moves on to the round of 32 where she will face Hawaii's Jamie Pawid at 10:00 am on Friday.
No. 55 Hoffpauir, who is the four seed in the tournament, defeated UC Santa Barbara's Sofia Novak in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 to advance. She will face Franziska Goettsching of UC Irvine in the round of 32 at 10:00 am on Friday as well.
Meanwhile, Claus earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ania Jeczmionka of Long Beach State that propelled her into the round of 32 tomorrow where she will meet Hawaii's Katarina Poljakova at 10:00 am.
Senior Maja Sujica was unable to get out of the first round after she lost to Julie Luzar of Long Beach State 7-5, 6-1. Suijca will play Martina Kostalova of Hawaii in the singles consolation Friday at 2:30 pm.
Sophomore Anna Depenau also came up short in her first-round singles match, losing to No. 107 Natasha Marks of Arizona 6-1, 6-2. Depenau and San Diego State's Sierra Ellison will faceoff in the singles consolation on Friday at 12:00 pm.
Due to a late change of the doubles draw, Haciraifoglu and Raygada had to play USD's lone doubles match on the day, where they fell to Hawaii's Barbara Pinterova and Xenia Suworowa 8-6 in the first round.
Day two action from Barnes Tennis Center is set to kickoff at 9:00 am with main draw doubles play.
