SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team jumped 18 spots to No. 49 in the Campbell/ITA Division I women's rankings released on Tuesday, Feb. 8th. The Toreros' (2-2) hefty jump comes on the heels of a 4-3 upset over No. 15 Washington this past Sunday.
Hosting the Huskies, USD took the doubles point to give them some early momentum. Freshman Anna Depenau won the first singles match for the Toreros in beating Aleksandra Krsljanin 6-3, 6-0. Washington would win the next two matches at No. 1 and No. 2 before Marite Raygada defeated Adriana Pavlovic 6-1, 7-6 (4) to give USD the 3-2 advantage. The Huskies came back to win on court four as the match came down to the outcome on court three between sophomore Laura Claus and Samantha Smith. Claus pulled out the marathon win by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (5), giving the Toreros the momentous victory.
Claus leads the Toreros with a 6-4 combined singles record on the year, while Depenau is tied for the team lead with a 6-7 overall mark. Raygada is a perfect 5-0 on the year and junior Juliette Coupez sits at 5-7 in singles.
The Toreros continue dual match play this Saturday, Feb. 12th with a home match against Arizona at 10:00 a.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 13th against South Florida at 10:00 a.m.
