Toreros Close Out Regular Dual Season with Matches Against LMU & SDSU

MATCH #22 & #23: The 66th-ranked University of San Diego women's tennis team (10-10), under the direction of head coach Sherri Stephens (26th year), will close out its regular dual season this coming week with two matches, beginning Thursday, April 15th against WCC partner Loyola Marymount University, and then will seal the 2010 campaign with a grande finale match on Monday, April 19th against cross-town rival 75th-ranked San Diego State University. Thursday's match, set to kick off at 1 p.m., will be held in Los Angeles, and Monday's contest, beginning at 4 p.m., will take place at the campus of SDSU.

LAST TIME(S) OUT: The Toreros dropped two matches this past week against 72nd-ranked UC Irvine and 52th-ranked St. Mary's College. Against the Anteaters, San Diego fell 6-1. Sophomore Marite Raygada secured the lone Torero point at No. 6 by taking down Hayley Young of UCI in straight sets. Then, USD made a quick trip home to close out its regular season homestand against the Gaels, falling just short by a final of 4-3.

RAYGADA NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE MONTH: The University of San Diego women's tennis team received good news last week, as sophomore Marite Raygada was named the West Coast Conference Womens Singles Player of the Month for March. Raygada went a perfect 8-0 in March. She is the winningest Torero thus far in the 2010 dual match campaign, toting an overall mark of 15-4 exclusively at the No. 6 position.

COACH STEPHENS NOTCHES 300TH WIN: Congratulations to Sherri Stephens for reaching another milestone in her Torero career. With the team's 5-2 victory over 41st-ranked Marshall University on March 24th, she claimed her 300th career victory as head coach of the USD women's tennis team. In the midst of her 26th year, she has tallied 16 winning seasons and 19 campaigns with records of .500 or better. During her outstanding career at the helm of the USD women's tennis program, Stephens has had one national champion (Zuzana Lesenarova, 1999), 5 WCC Players of the Year, 8 teams ranked in the ITA top-25, 9 teams advance to the NCAA Tournament, 12 NCAA All-Americans, 17 teams in the final ITA team ranking, and 44 individual appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

TOREROS POLL BOUND: This week in the ITA College Tennis Rankings, the Toreros fall two spots to No. 66. San Diego has been ranked as high as No. 45 this season, after downing then 28th-ranked LSU at the ITA Kick-Off held in Los Angeles on the campus of University of Southern California. The Toreros have managed to capture three wins against ranked opponents this season - #28 LSU, #41 Marshall, and #70 Washington St.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: The Lions are 3-14 in dual match play thus far this season, with five matches remaining in the regular season campaign. LMU will face Cal St. Fullerton on Tuesday, April 13th before squaring off against the Toreros on Thursday.

SCOUTING THE AZTECS: The 75-ranked Aztecs (9-9) San Diego State will play host to Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force this week at Aztec Tennis Center, before taking on USD on Monday. The three matches will wrap up SDSU's Mountain West Conference slate. SDSU has two players ranked in the ITA singles polls - (56) Julia Trunk and (91) Alicia Aguilar.
