Irvine, CA - The smell alone of the eucalyptus groves that surround Anteater track stadium quickly places collegiate runners in a Southern California coastal UC track environment. It is known by wise cultures that the eucalyptus is an essential oil that brings out the best of health. The Torero track team got a strong dosage of the natural smell of the eucalyptus which helped them secure the best day in their young track history.
The day began with a fast first heat of the 800 meters. Freshman Emerald Raney clocked a great opening 400m with a 64 to bring in yet another 800m school record for the Toreros. Her finishing time of 2:17.38 eclipsed her previous record set weeks ago at Drake Stadium. The 800m heats continued to bring great results as Sophomore, Jenessa Rose finished with a year personal best of 2:22.71 in the 2nd heat. The third 800m heat was highlighted by a victory by Sophomore Kirsten Allan who finished the day with a personal best in 2:24.87.
The remarkable performances continued in the 3rd heat of the 1,500m. Junior, Samantha Espindola shattered her own personal best by 7 seconds. She also took home a hard fought victory by pushing the last 800m of the race.
"We are so proud of the work that Samantha has been able to do." said Coach Will Guarino. "She continues to show no limits and has raced events that range from the 1500m to the 10,000 meters this year."
Other notable performances have to also be credited to the rest of the pack that ran personal bests in the 1,500m. Tracy Vargo, Alex Clancy, and Melissa Lupinacci each ran an outstanding race and helped contribute to the outstanding day for the Toreros.
The Women's 4 x 400m (Allan, Rose, Buck & Raney) shaved another 2 seconds off their school record by bringing home a victory with a 4:11.17 in the first heat of the relay. The B team (Williams, Shambaugh, Lupinacci, McAneney) also ran a personal best and finished 3rd in the same heat.
The Men's team ran unattached and ran under the Morley Field Experience name. Luke Deanitz, Freshman from Park City took control of his 400m heat and ran a great 2nd half of the race to victory in the open 400m.
The 800m provided no exception as Chris Flaherty broke the magical 2:00 barrier for his first time and also set a personal best in the 800m closing in at 1:58.61. He finished 3rd in his heat. He was also supported by strong performances from his other teammates Senior Marcus Lopez, and Sophomore Trevor Carlson. His teammates where not only elated for his personal best, but they also celebrated with personal bests of their own.
Erik Anderson finished with a personal best in the 1500m with a time of 4:05.27. "That was the fastest I've ever ran the metric mile" said Erik Anderson. He was followed by a key victory by Justin Healey 4:10.09 in the 3rd heat of the day. Justin was pushed by Sophomore John Maheu whom pushed the pace from the gun and concluded the 1500m with a personal best.
A smaller pack of Toreros will now travel to Occidental College to compete in the OXY invitational this upcoming Saturday. This invite will conclude the outdoor season for both squads. The Toreros are planning to bring a team eucalyptus branch for continued good health.
