SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a dominate performance from junior All-American middle hitter Chloe Ferrari and sophomore outside hitter Alaysia Brown, the 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-10) victory over Fresno State University in the USD Tournament Friday evening inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Ferrari recorded 12 kills on 15 swings, while committing no errors, to hit for a .800 clip, which ties her for third at USD in single-match hitting percentage. Brown wasn't too shabby either, as she recorded a match-best 13 kills, while hitting at a .259 clip. Junior setter Rachel Alvey recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs, while both Carrie Baird and Kandiss Anderson had a team-best 12 digs apiece. As a team, USD hit .469, while holding the Bulldogs to a .238 clip.
In the first set, the Bulldogs managed to hang close with the Toreros in the early going. Then with the score at 5-4 in favor of the visitors, an Anderson service ace ignited a 6-1 San Diego run that was capped on a Katie Hoekman kill, to give USD a 10-6 advantage. After the Bulldogs crept back to within two at 10-8, a Shelby Staab kill jump started the Toreros offense to a 5-2 run, giving San Diego a 15-10 lead, and forcing the visitors into a timeout. Out of the break, USD proved to be too strong to overcome, as they eased their way to a 25-20 victory.
In the second set, it was close once again in the early going, then with the Toreros leading 11-10, a Hoekman kill sparked a 6-3 USD run, which forced Fresno State into a timeout. Out of the break, San Diego grabbed the next two points on a Fresno State attack error and a Baird kill, which forced the Bulldogs into another timeout. USD never let off the gas, as they continued to dominate the set and cruised their way to a 25-20 victory.
In the third and final set, USD raced out to a 7-3 lead, and never looked back. As a team, the Toreros hit .500 in this frame alone, while the San Diego defense held the Bulldogs to a -.032 hitting percentage. USD would complete the sweep with a 25-10 victory.
San Diego will return to action on Saturday at noon, as they continue play in the USD Tournament with a match against Yale. The Toreros will then conclude the weekend on Saturday with a 7 p.m. night cap against UC Santa Barbara.
