SAN DIEGO, CA - In the home opener for reigning West Coast Conference Champion and 18th-ranked San Diego, the Toreros convincingly swept UNLV by game scores of 30-17, 30-23 and 30-17. Toreros head coach Jennifer Petrie used 12 different players Thursday night, with junior stars Kristen Carlson and Christie Dawson (pictured) leading the way with a combined 28 kills. Dawson put down 13 kills without making an error to post an attack percentage of .765.
San Diego (7-1), 12-1 at home a year ago, begins a four-game home stand hosting the 2005 USD Invitational needing just 1 hour and 25 minutes to dispose of UNLV (3-6). Record-setting upperclassmen Jackie Bernardin and Lindsey Sherburne were outstanding for San Diego. Bernardin, who has twice been named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, totaled a match-high 20 digs and Sherburne, an AVCA All-American, had 43 assists and 14 digs.
UNLV was held to an attack percentage of .154. After a lopsided loss in game one, the Rebels rallied to put up 23 points in game two. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Miramontes had a team-high eight kills as no Rebel player reached double figures in that category.
