SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 16th ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team defeated the University of Portland on Saturday afternoon inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion by a score of 3-1.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 12-2 overall, and remain undefeated in WCC play at 4-0, and now move into sole possession of first place in the WCC, thanks to Saint Mary's defeating previously unbeaten BYU, 3-1, this afternoon. The Portland Pilots now hold a record of 6-12, and have yet to get a win in conference, as they fall to 0-4.
Alaysia Brown and Chloe Ferrari were the key offensive pieces for the Toreros in their victory over Portland. Alaysia Brown led the team with 13 kills, hitting for a .407 clip. Chloe Ferrari had 11 kills, however, on only 15 attempts, resulting in an impressive .733 clip. Rachel Alvey recorded 45 assists, and added four kills, and Kandiss Anderson led the defense with 13 digs. The Toreros, as a team, hit .282 for the match, while holding the Pilots to a match hitting percentage of .117.
The Toreros and Pilots were even to start the match, but a kill by Sandra Lozic sparked a 5-0 Torero run, to give them an early lead of 8-4. The match went back and forth until Chloe Ferrari got a kill to start a 6-1 run for the Toreros extending the lead 20-13. Portland called a timeout in an effort to regroup, but the Toreros were too much, closing out the set 25-16. The Toreros out hit the Pilots in the first set .469 to .118.
The Toreros stormed out of the gates in the second set jumping out to an early 5-1 lead forcing an early timeout by the Pilots. Before a kill by the Pilot's Ariel Usher, the Toreros were on an 8-2 run to start the set led by the serving of Kandiss Anderson, who recorded two aces. The Toreros were just too strong for the Pilot's in the second set as they won by a score of 25-15.
After the halftime break, the Pilot's looked poise to try and steal a set away from the Toreros. The two teams battled tightly, with the Toreros not able to pull away early in the set. A kill by Autumn Wedan to make the score 10-8 ignited the Pilots to a 6-1 run, causing the Toreros to call a timeout with the score 11-14. The two teams battled it out toughly as a Sandra Lozic kill made the score 15-16, but a ball handling error by Katie Hoekman started a 5-0 run for the Pilots, and USD could not overcome this, as they fell in the third set 25-20.
USD bounced right back in the fourth and final set however, as a Brown kill ignited a 7-3 Toreros run right out of the gates, forcing the Pilots into a timeout. USD continued to dominate and eventually built up a lead as big as 11 at 19-8 on a Portland attack error. USD never looked back as they cruised on in for a 25-16 win.
USD will return to action on Wednesday, as they battle Saint Mary's in a nationally televised WCC match on ESPNU. The match will begin at 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
