(San Diego, CA) - No. 13 San Diego wrapped up its regular season schedule by thumping cross-town rivals San Diego State in three games Tuesday night at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD (22-4) played 14 of its 15 active players, defeating SDSU (4-25) by game scores of (30-15, 30-18 and 30-26). The match Tuesday was televised live locally on Cox Channel 4 San Diego. Senior star Devon Forster had a match-high 14 kills for a Torero team that awaits an automatic berth in NCAA Tournament. San Diego ran the table within the WCC (14-0) en route to winning its first league title since 1998.
Tuesday's match seemed to be not much more than a formality for two teams heading in opposite directions. The 13th-ranked Toreros have realistic postseason aspirations of advancing deep into the NCAA Tournament while the Aztecs finish the 2004 season having won just four times. USD has won 16 consecutive matches dating back to October 1st and its national ranking of 13th is a program best. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air at 3:45pm (PT) on ESPNNEWS this Sunday. The Toreros have put in a bid to host First and Second Round play at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Three Torero seniors playing in their final regular season match were honored Tuesday. Senior's Katie Kahlweiss (Huntington Beach, CA), Kristen Hurst (Bakersfield, CA) and Devon Forster (Boulder, CO) each earned four varsity letters playing for six-year USD head coach Jennifer Petrie. The trio have been essential in helping San Diego qualify for its fourth straight NCAA Tournament. Forster, sure to be a four-time All-WCC First Team selection, is the leading candidate for 2004 WCC Player of the Year honors.
