SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's volleyball team has been ranked No. 19 in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll that was released Monday afternoon.
Last season, USD posted an impressive 13-0 start to the season, the best start in program history, and went on to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 28-5. Now USD is rested, and ready to rumble.
The Toreros have a rigorous schedule ahead of them that feature NCAA Tournament participants, Texas, USC, LSU, Long Beach State and Pepperdine. The Toreros can turn to an experienced roster that features five All-WCC performers, highlighted by 2011 AVCA All-American Chloe Ferrari. Alongside Ferrari, the Toreros welcome back first-team All-WCC honoree Katie Hoekman, and All-WCC honorable mention selections Kandiss Anderson and Amber Tatsch.
The coaches are excited about the young crop of talent that they have including, what could be a break-out year for sophomore middle-hitter Alaysia Brown. Brown has had a great spring, and an even better summer. The USD coaches are excited about her development, as well as the development of All-WCC freshman team honoree Sandra Lozic and junior setter Rachel Alvey.
The Toreros are looking to return to the No. 1 position of the WCC standings, and they can rely on experience, a strong preseason schedule, as well as an excellent coaching staff to get there.
The Toreros open the season on the road at the Burnt Orange Classic hosted by Texas on Aug. 24 with a 12:30 p.m. match against Cal Poly.
