The 2007-2008 Torero Spirit Team returned to campus last week to begin training and attended a camp put on by the Universal Dance Association August 10-12 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The team trained intensively for three days alongside some of the best dance and cheer teams in the country. The 28 Torero spirit team members participated in several evaluations while at camp, including an evaluation on the team's performance of the USD fight song. They succeeded in bringing home a superior trophy, as well as recognition, for attention to tradition, choreography, and the team's overall performance of the USD fight song. They were evaluated against such teams as UNLV, UC Davis, and St. Mary's. The team also brought home a superior trophy for quality work ethic and overall improvement over the course of the camp. The team has returned to USD to continue training in preparation for the upcoming Torero football season. We have a talented and outstanding team this year, and are very proud of their performance and hard work! The Torero Spirit Team at the Marist Football Game

 Nicole LaBarbera Spirit Team Head Coach - Nicole LaBarbera is the Head Coach of the University of San Diego Spirit Team. The 2008-2009 season will be her third year coaching the Spirit Team, after coaching the former USD Dance Team for four years. She is a native of Los Angeles, CA and was a professional dancer for almost 8 years, although she has been dancing from the young age of 5. She attended Palos Verdes Peninsula High school where she was on the dance team and a song leader for 4 years, winning several national trophies with her squad in her time there and performing in Superbowl halftime with Michael Jackson. She attended the University of San Diego and graduated in 2000 with a B.A. in English. In 2001, she was an ABA dancer for the San Diego Wildfire professional basketball team and taught dance to children and teens in the San Diego area. She went on to become a member of the professional dance troupe Fusion Force for 3 years, then became a dancer for the Cirque De La Mer show. Moving back to Los Angeles in 2003, she danced for artists such as Houston and Tawny T, appeared in several music videos, movies, and commercials. She has worked with choreographers such as Shane Sparks, Rich & Tone, Wade Robson, and Fatima. She continues to work as a model, but devotes her time to coaching the Torero Spirit Team. She is proud of her team and the successful year they have had. She took her team to compete at the USA Collegiate Dance Nationals and brought home a trophy for the first time in USD history! Her team also attended and performed at the NCAA first and second round basketball tournament this past March. She looks forward to another successful year! She is assisted by coach Amy Bodnar, former 4 year dancer and captain at USD. |
